Trend: PLATFORMS! My journey filled with frustration finally came to an end (+ Naomi Campbell fall)

Finally. After searching for what feels like an eternity I found them… affordable platform sneakers in my size! You might already saw them in my OOTD post a couple of days ago, but I’m so pleased with them that I decided to give it a post on its own. These beauties deserve a minute of attention (just like Naomi Campbell her fall during a Vivienne Westwood show wearing INSANE platforms. Major respect to her but I can’t help to laugh every time I replay it. She finished her walk like a true queen though).

During my search for these platform sneakers I’ve been very frustrated. I had the feeling that it was impossible to find platform sneakers in my size for less than €200,-. I understand that the female consumer base for this type of apparel is way bigger than the male consumer base but .. that doesn’t mean that there are no men out there with the desire to rock the Spice Girls look! Female, male, straight, gay, bi, white, brown, tall, small... the Spice Girls were awesome and left their stamp on fashion forever. Everyone should be able to mix a little bit Spice (Girls) in their wardrobe regardless to who or what they are.

At the top of my frustration I almost purchased a pair of platform sneakers at H&M a few months ago. It didn’t bother me anymore that they were size 40 and I needed a 43. But thank god for a best friend to stop you from stupid mistakes like that. It was easy for her though. All the big clothing manufacturers started to sell affordable platform shoes in female sizes since the popularity started to rise. I have the feeling that this sudden popularity has something to do with the Underground Creepers  which gained a major fan base during the last couple of years. The need for platforms is big. We live in a time where individuality is key. So let’s gain a few inches in height and stand out!

Excuse me for this long plea but I had to share my frustration. Let me give you some more details on the Adidas Gazelles Platforms.

So the design of the shoe is not entirely new. The Gazelles have already been part of the Adidas collection for numerous years and are icons on the street. Adidas made a smart move by applying this trend on a model that is already popular. And even if you wouldn’t recognize the Adidas Gazelle, you would most definitely recognize the world famous three stripes /// !

The shoes come in two colors: black and grey. The shoe is made of quality pigskin suede on the top and leather (polka dots) details at the heel patch and the iconic three stripes. This polka dot design is also future on the inside of the shoe which is made out of comfortable textile lining. The sole consist out of rubber with a nice texture to it. This textured surface really gives the shoe an urban aesthetic. The sole is 4.5 cm high (1.8 inch) and extremely easy to walk on. Just never forget that you are living a few centimeters higher. Because gravel, grit and especially staircases can surprise you when you run a little to enthusiastically!

Please leave a comment how you feel about platforms and maybe you might even have some secret websites you could share with us!

Blog to you later!

P.S:
The sneakers also make an appearance in Iggy Azalea het music video for ‘Fancy’ at 1:06.

"It's a new art form showing people how little we care"

“It’s a new art form showing people how little we care”

It’s one of my favourite lines out of the song Tennis Court by Lorde. It describes a feeling that hits close to home and something I see happening quite a lot lately.

It amazes me how a 17-year-old can have such a strong image and identity at that age. To be honest, it makes me a little bit jealous every time I see one of those kids breaking through with one of those unique old souls. At that age, I was so afraid to be different that I dressed as boring as possible in order to not stand out (some of you might recognize this feeling.. ugh, high school).  This is different nowadays but I am still learning to let that feeling go for the full 100%. But people like Lorde inspire me and are helping me to get to that point. They are truly living life like Ayn Rand once said:

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

This behavior I’m describing here about not carrying what other people think and just doing you is something I find extremely fascinating. Because is it possible to just put everyone their opinion  aside and live your life without carrying about what people say about you? I am not entirely sure of  it but these doubts are mainly based on insecurity and fear. I hope that ,with the help of people like Lorde, we will reach a point in time where I am able to answer that question with a genuine “YES”.

These thoughts and feelings are translated in this picture. I made it with one of my friends, Nienke Monster. She studies photography and every now and then we like to collaborate on a project. She does the shooting and I do the editing.

Let me know your opinion on this topic or/and the picture!

OOTD / first real SUNday!

Shoes Adidas X Gazelle / Trousers Cheap Monday / T-shirt Weekday / Glasses Vintage

The sun is finally giving the Dutch citizens what they want, those long summer days where the sun shines from 6:00 AM till 11:00 PM and all you do is just chill and enjoy life.

I woke up this morning feeling pretty shitty as a result of an amazing night out with friends. My plan of spending the entire day in bed watching Netflix was interrupted by the sun which burned me out of my bed. Too bad I couldn’t reach my sunglasses while still laying in bed because if that was an option I would have slept for another hour with them on. Besides that, my mouth was as dry as the Sahara and I was in desperate need of a refreshing drink.

One of my friends asked if we could do something fun today and since the sun was shining and I was already awake I decided to pick her up and have a little roadtrip! She is a photography student and took her camera with her. During the roadtrip we constantly looked for urban/industrial scenes to take pictures but we couldn’t find a particular setting we liked. So we decided to just park the car and walk some small forgotten roads and meadows.

Because of the hot weather I put on a very baggy t-shirt. It is actually a t-shirt dress with the hem just above my knees but because of my arms being up and the wind blowing it appears to look a lot shorter. The extra fabric fluttered with the wind which I find very pleasing with high temperatures. It’s of amazing quality and the tie-dye (ish) marks are actually painted like that and not printed on. I love it when there is time invested in a piece of clothing and not just as fast and cheap produced as possible.

The pants I’m wearing are one of my favorites. I’m not a big fan of denim (at least not on my legs, I prefer it as a top or in the trashcan) so most of the time I’ll go for a darker colored pair of pants. The grey and white textured fabric really add to the print of the t-shirt resulting in a grungy and rough look.

Then the shoes, currently my favorite item! They are the Adidas Gazelles Platform Sneakers in black which I originally spotted in Iggy Azalea’s music video 'Fancy' (which is to die for BTW, that video gave me life!). I’m planning on writing an article about them so I will not bother you with more information right now.

The glasses I’m wearing are vintage round-shaped sunglasses which I bought at one of my favorite stores in Amsterdam called ‘Zipper’. I like expensive (designer)clothes but these were 10 Euros and I highly prefer them above my designer shades (shades.. I feel so gangster when I use that word). The fact that I bought them in a vintage store and they costed me 10 bucks does bother me though.. They are probably just brand new and being marketed as “vintage” since its one of the biggest trends in the last 5 years..
